Lansing Watch – Gilbert Bill Package could be voted on this week
Detroit, May 2, 2017 – Last week the Dan Gilbert-backed Brownfield Redevelopment Corporate Welfare bills were voted out of the Tax Policy Committee and could be voted on by the full House this week. We believe that 3 amendments will be offered on the bill package. The bills are Senate Bills 111-115.
1) Must consider whether the development has a 51% local hire requirement.
2) Allow local governing body to require a Community Benefits Agreement.
3) Create local review board so that local governing body can essentially reevaluate how things are going and every 5 years reassess.
We oppose this bill package. A YES vote without the amendments listed above will increase the transfer of needed public funds to private projects and more corporate welfare when everyday Detroiters and people across the state continue to struggle.
Contact to your State Representatives to raise your concerns about this bill as another corporate give away! Reach out to your friends and family across the state and encourage them to contact their Representatives as well. We will post updates as we have them.
