Action Alert: Affordable Housing
September 16, 2017
To: Detroit People’s Platform members and supporters of Racial and Economic Justice
The Inclusionary Zoning Ordinance which will create a Housing Trust Fund for the city of Detroit, passed out of committee yesterday. This ordinance goes before Council as a Whole Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at 10am at 2 Woodward (CAYMC) on the 13th floor. The ordinance will not solve the affordability crisis by itself, but it is surely a step in the right direction toward housing justice in Detroit, and creates momentum for us to push for even more going forward.
Last Thursday, the room was packed with developers who argued that the bill places “undue burden” on corporate developers and their ability to maximize profit and minimize risk off the backs of working Detroiters. We expect those who want to block this ordinance will be out in full force on Tuesday. We need your support.
1) Come to the press conference at 9am at the Spirit of Detroit statue at 2 Woodward (Woodward side)—Detroit People’s Platform and other members of the HTF Coalition, including Lisa Franklin of Warriors on Wheels, will be explaining why this is a step in the right direction. We will also provide information about what still needs to be done, and how the ordinance can be improved.
2) You have the opportunity to give public comment about affordable housing. The hearing starts at 10am and may last a few hours. We encourage all to arrive by 9:30 to get a comment card.
Detroit People’s Platform will be gathering to review the ordinance, share talking points and prepare to speak at council on Monday from 12-2pm at Detroit People’s Platform HQ at 7700 2nd (5th Floor). All who support truly affordable housing are invited to attend.
