Affordable Housing Ordinance moved out of committee! See you next Tuesday
Today, the Planning and Economic Development Committee of Detroit City Council voted out of committee an affordable housing ordinance that the Detroit Housing Trust Fund Coalition, anchored by Detroit Peoples Platform, heavily influenced and powerfully advocated for over the past 12 months.
While the affordable housing crisis is not going to be solved by this victory, and so much work remains to be done to get truly affordable housing built and preserved in Detroit, it is most certainly a victory and a strong step in the right direction.
Now, we have momentum with which to build a larger and more powerful platform for housing justice in Detroit. To educate the public and elected officials and capitalize on growing interest in this critical human rights issue.
The public hearing for this bill will take place on Tuesday, September 19th at 10 a.m. on the 13th floor of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Building (2 Woodward). We invite all members of the public who support affordable housing to attend and share your comments and concerns.
Stay tuned for more info on what changes and additions would make the ordinance even more powerful!
