Duggan’s Legacy?
The loss of 100,000 Black Detroiters

November 14, 2024, Detroit - In response to the mayor’s announcement that he will not seek re-election in 2025, Detroit People’s Platform offers the following observation:

During the tenure of Mayor Duggan, the often-celebrated Detroit recovery was fueled by the transfer of Black public wealth to white billionaires and their private economic development schemes, largely in downtown and midtown.

The resulting impact on majority Black residents - an explosion in racial and economic inequality, a housing crisis, stagnant rates of poverty and the loss of roughly 100,000 Black residents.

In our analysis this administration has sacrificed the well-being of its largest constituency, majority Black Detroit, to achieve limited gains that Black Detroiters will live with decades beyond the mayor’s departure.

Where is the accountability for that?
