Canvassing
The purpose of the canvass is to account for every ballot cast and ensure that every valid vote cast is included in the election totals.
Canvassers, County and State
Each county in Michigan has a Board of County Canvassers. Each of these boards is bipartisan, with two Republican canvassers and two Democratic canvassers. Each board is tasked with completing their county’s canvass and certification process. Michigan’s Board of State Canvassers is composed of four members who are appointed by the Governor with the advice and consent of the Senate. Two board members are selected from each of the two political parties receiving the greatest number of votes in the last election for Secretary of State.
The Electoral College
The Electoral College is comprised of 538 people, known as electors, chosen nationwide to meet in their home states and cast one vote per person for president and vice president. Michigan has 16 electors to reflect the number of senators and representatives it has in the U.S. Congress. Presidential candidates on the Michigan ballot submit a list of 16 qualified electors to the Secretary of State’s Office. The 16 electors whose candidate wins Michigan’s popular vote will participate in the Electoral College at the State Capitol in December.
Election Certification
Election certification refers to the process of election officials attesting that the election results are a true and accurate accounting of all votes cast in a particular election. Only election officials provide official election results.
Election Results
Unofficial results are published after the polls close on election night and continue to be released until all ballots are counted. Importantly, the results reported on election night are not final even though the media may call the projected winner. Election results are unofficial until they are certified. Therefore, candidates cannot claim an official win until the election has been officially certified.
